Türkiye sees hope for peace in Ukraine after Trump's election FM Fidan says
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has said that his country supports Ukraine's territorial integrity, adding there are reasons to believe the conflict could be resolved following Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election.
“We stand firmly behind Ukraine’s territorial integrity, as evidenced by our position on Crimea. However, we do not believe this war benefits either side. It only leads to more human suffering, destruction, and escalating costs. We convey this to our American and Western counterparts and emphasize the need for negotiations between the parties,” Fidan said in an interview with Turkish media, Caliber.Az reports.
The minister highlighted that from the outset of the conflict, Türkiye has advocated for diplomacy as the priority.
"From the first days of the war, we pushed for diplomacy and sought to bring both sides to the negotiating table. Initially, we facilitated talks in Antalya and later in Istanbul. Towards the end of the technical discussions in Istanbul, we were very close to reaching a peace agreement," Fidan recalled.
He reiterated that “Türkiye is prepared to play a mediating role in the pursuit of a just and lasting peace, within formats and parameters that are mutually agreed upon by both sides of the conflict.”
On the US-Türkiye relations, Fidan noted that “high-level dialogue based on allied relationship continues to develop, regardless of who is in power in the United States." He added that the “strategic mechanism” established to address issues between the two countries will continue to function, and that Türkiye expects the new US administration to engage in “constructive and comprehensive problem-solving.”
