Türkiye signals readiness to normalise ties with Armenia under conditions
Türkiye is ready to normalise relations with Armenia if the necessary conditions are met, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said in an interview with Türkiye newspaper following his visit to Russia on June 16–17.
Fidan noted that the Armenian government under Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has taken “very important steps” toward normalisation, while President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has also supported a series of measures, including the launch of direct trade and air connections.
He stressed that Ankara remains open to full normalisation when the conditions are in place, adding that “what needs to be done in the new period is also clear.”
Earlier, Erdoğan congratulated Pashinyan on his parliamentary election victory on June 7, with both sides expressing satisfaction over increasing diplomatic contacts.
Despite sharing a common border, Türkiye and Armenia do not maintain formal diplomatic relations, and the border has remained closed since 1993. The two countries are currently engaged in a gradual normalisation process, including limited agreements such as opening the border for third-country citizens holding diplomatic passports.
