Türkiye, Syria deepen security coordination as FMs meet in Ankara

06 August 2026 17:07

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and his Syrian counterpart, Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani, discussed regional security, counterterrorism efforts and Syria's post-war reconstruction during talks in Ankara.

Fidan emphasised that the security of the Arab Gulf states is crucial to the stability of the Middle East as a whole, Caliber.Az reports via Al Hadath.

Al-Shaibani, in turn, said Syria condemns any acts of aggression against countries in the region. He also accused illegal armed groups of using border areas in neighbouring states to pose security threats to Syria, stressing that Damascus is determined to counter those challenges.

Fidan also emphasised the need for the complete disarmament of all armed groups in Syria, regardless of their origin.

The two ministers further discussed the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure, strengthening state institutions, and creating conditions for the safe and voluntary return of Syrian refugees.
