Türkiye, Syria sign memorandum on military cooperation PHOTO
The defence ministers of Türkiye and Syria have signed a memorandum on military cooperation, as announced by the Turkish Ministry of National Defence on social network X.
“Following a meeting in which bilateral and regional defence and security issues were discussed, Minister Yaşar Güler and Syrian Defence Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra signed a Memorandum of Understanding on joint training and consultancy,” the statement said, per Caliber.Az.
Earlier today, August 13, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with the Syrian delegation, including Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani, Defence Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra, and Head of Syrian Intelligence Hussein al-Salama in Ankara. The sides discussed current regional security issues, the situation in Syria, and ways to normalise Turkish-Syrian relations.
Türkiye and Syria have had strained relations since the Syrian civil war began in 2011, with Ankara supporting opposition groups against the former Assad regime. The ousting of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024 marked a turning point, prompting Türkiye to engage with Syria’s interim government to support reconstruction and stability.
