Türkiye to face challenges in joining BRICS Politician says

30 September 2024 12:23

Deputy chairman of the Turkish Vatan (Homeland) party Hakan Topkurulu has said that the process for the Turkish Parliament to approve the country's entry into BRICS is expected to be challenging, given numerous pro-Western politicians in the government.

Topkurulu highlighted Ankara’s political courage in applying for BRICS membership despite many Western-aligned figures in parliament, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

"I hope BRICS will not make a mistake and will not create problems for Türkiye's application. However, gaining approval for membership from the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye will not be easy. The outcome of this struggle will have significant implications for both the Atlantic and Asian sides," Topkurulu noted.

He also expressed hope that Türkiye will successfully complete its fight for BRICS membership.

The information went viral on September 2 that Türkiye officially submitted its application to join BRICS. The decision to seek membership was made several months ago, following unsuccessful negotiations to join the EU, in which Türkiye has been a candidate since 1999.

The stalled EU negotiations, ongoing since 2005, have contributed to Türkiye's closer ties with Russia since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's administration believes that the "geopolitical centre of gravity" is shifting away from Western nations. Nevertheless, Ankara intends to fulfill its NATO obligations and maintain relationships with all countries in a multipolar world. Previously, the speaker of the Turkish Parliament stated that Türkiye's accession to BRICS would be beneficial for the entire world.

BRICS is an intergovernmental organization comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates. The group's goal is to promote peace, security, and development, as well as to enhance economic growth through mutual cooperation. It seeks to provide an alternative to the global influence of Western powers.
