Türkiye warns of risk of “uncontrolled escalation” in Black Sea

29 May 2026 17:42

On May 29, Türkiye warned against “uncontrolled escalation” in the Black Sea region after a Turkish cargo vessel was damaged in a drone attack on the evening of May 28.

According to Al Arabiya, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement urging all parties to avoid actions that could lead to further escalation, without naming a specific actor.

“We reiterate our warning to all parties concerned: any action that could lead to an uncontrolled escalation of the conflict must be avoided,” the Turkish foreign ministry wrote in a statement, without naming a suspect.

Earlier on May 29, the Ukrainian Navy said that Russia had attacked a vessel carrying cargo from the Odesa region.

“We have conveyed to the parties concerned... our concerns regarding the risks and threats posed to our region by the recent escalation of the conflict in the Black Sea, as well as our warnings about the potential negative repercussions for our country,” the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in its statement.
