Twin earthquakes hit Naples region, residents flee buildings
A strong earthquake rocked the Naples region of Italy on the afternoon of May 13, sending shockwaves through the city and prompting emergency evacuations.
The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reported that the quake struck with a magnitude of 4.4, followed shortly by a secondary tremor measuring 3.5, per Caliber.Az.
Both quakes were centred in the western outskirts of Naples, within the seismically active Phlegraean Fields — a vast volcanic area known for its unrest.
Residents in and around Naples felt the tremors clearly, with many rushing into the streets in alarm. The quakes stirred fresh concern, as the area experienced similar seismic swarms just two months ago.
Local authorities responded swiftly. According to Il Mattino, the University of Federico II and several schools in the city were evacuated as a safety precaution, with officials prioritising the protection of students and staff.
Seismic activity in the Phlegraean Fields has been intensifying in recent months, fueling worries over potential volcanic risks. Tuesday’s tremors are the latest in a series of quakes that have put the region on edge.
