Two dead after overpass collapse in Seoul during demolition work
Two people were killed and four others injured after part of an aging overpass undergoing demolition in Seoul partially collapsed on May 26, officials said.
The accident occurred at 2:32 p.m. when sections of the Seosomun Overpass and other construction debris fell to the ground. The victims, both men in their 50s and 60s, were pronounced dead at the scene, Yonhap reports.
Authorities said a total of 12 workers had initially been dispatched to the site, while six people managed to evacuate before the collapse.
An official from the Seodaemun Fire Station said preliminary findings suggest that a structure supporting the overpass may have failed shortly after safety inspections began at around 2 p.m.
The falling debris also struck a nearby railway line, prompting Korea Railroad Corporation to suspend rail services between Seoul Station and Sinchon Station.
The Seosomun Overpass had been scheduled for demolition by early next month as part of redevelopment and safety measures.
Following the incident, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung ordered a thorough investigation into the cause of the collapse and instructed officials to develop measures to prevent similar accidents, presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said in a statement.
Lee also called for “utmost efforts” to manage the aftermath of the accident and ensure proper treatment for those injured.
Earlier, Prime Minister Kim Min-seok ordered the full mobilization of rescue personnel and equipment to assist victims.
Kim instructed the Seoul city government, the land ministry and related agencies to fully cooperate in rescue operations, identify medical facilities capable of receiving victims and ensure the rapid transportation of the injured in an effort to minimize casualties.
He also urged authorities to guarantee the safety of rescue workers and restrict access to the accident site to prevent further injuries.
