UK could permit US strikes on Iran from British bases, says labour veteran PHOTO
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer could ultimately allow Donald Trump to use UK military bases to launch airstrikes on Iran, Special Envoy for Women and Girls Baroness Harriet Harman has said.
Speaking on Sky News’ Electoral Dysfunction podcast, Harman noted that this would mark a major political shift for Starmer, whose generation in Britain’s Labour Party was “shaped” by opposition to the 2003 Iraq War, Caliber.Az reports.
Harman served as solicitor general under then-Prime Minister Tony Blair, who led Britain into the Iraq War alongside the United States. She said the legacy of those decisions remains vivid.
"He's part of the political generation of the Labour Party that grew up, which was shaped by its opposition to what Tony Blair was doing in relation to Iraq," Harman said. "So it would be a massive change for him."
Asked whether London might permit US forces to use British military bases in Cyprus and Diego Garcia (a UK territory in the Indian Ocean) without directly engaging in further military actions, Harman replied: "Exactly."
Her comments follow a Sky News report revealing that UK Attorney General Richard Hermer has raised concerns about the legality of Israeli strikes on Iran, potentially constraining how far Britain could go in backing a US-led effort.
According to her, for Starmer, the "rules-based international order is the most important thing".
"If the attorney general says that the government can't do something because it's illegal, it can't do it. So he's in a very crucial position," she added.
But Baroness Harman said it would be difficult for Sir Keir to say "thank you for the trade deal" to Mr Trump and then deny the president use of the airbases.
