UK to host Europe’s first Universal theme park by 2031
In a recent article, BBC highlights that the UK is set to host Europe’s first-ever Universal theme park, slated to open in Bedfordshire by 2031.
The multi-billion-pound project promises to create thousands of jobs, attract millions of visitors, and put the region on the global entertainment map.
Spanning 476 acres, the complex is anticipated to attract 8.5 million visitors in its first year, according to Universal. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer hailed the multibillion-pound investment, stating it would "see Bedford home to one of the biggest entertainment parks in Europe, firmly putting the county on the global stage."
Universal Destinations and Experiences announced that 80 per cent of the new jobs will be filled by people from Bedfordshire and nearby areas. The company, known for major productions like Minions and Wicked, operates successful parks in Orlando, Los Angeles, Osaka, Sentosa, and Beijing.
The Bedfordshire site will become "one of the largest and most advanced" theme parks in Europe, making it a significant addition to Universal's global portfolio. Notably, this park will be the first in Europe designed and built from the ground up by Universal, though the company had previously lent its name to Spain’s PortAventura resort.
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy called the investment "fantastic news" for the UK economy, highlighting the opportunity to showcase British creations like James Bond, Paddington Bear, and Harry Potter alongside American entertainment.
Universal's plans include a theme park, a 500-room hotel, and a retail complex. While 476 acres have been secured, the company may acquire additional land to expand the site to 700 acres for improved transport links.
A planning proposal will be submitted in 2026, with construction set to begin shortly after. Despite positive feedback from residents, concerns about infrastructure have been raised, with Universal reporting that 92 per cent of surveyed locals support the project.
