UK withdraws its US envoy amid Epstein ties allegations
Peter Mandelson has been withdrawn from his role as the United Kingdom’s ambassador to the United States with immediate effect, following revelations about his ties with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Stephen Doughty, the UK Foreign Office minister, informed the House of Commons that Mandelson had been removed from the post, Caliber.Az reports via Sky News.
"In light of additional information in emails written by Peter Mandelson, the prime minister has asked the foreign secretary to withdraw him as ambassador to the United States. The emails show that the depth and extent of his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein is materially different from that known at the time of his appointment," Doughty said, speaking to MPs.
He added that a key factor in the decision was Mandelson's view regarding Epstein's criminal record.
"Mandelson's suggestion that Jeffrey Epstein's first conviction was wrongful and should be challenged," he added. Doughty described this as "new information," which led to the ambassador’s withdrawal.
At the session, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the ambassador had undergone "thorough vetting procedures in the lead up to being appointed to the top job." The prime minister, however, did not clarify what he knew about Mandelson's relationship with Epstein prior to the appointment.
Mandelson has denied any wrongdoing.
