Ukraine detains alleged Russian agent for coordinating airstrikes in Zaporizhzhia
The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) said it has detained a suspected agent working for Federal Security Service who allegedly helped coordinate Russian airstrikes in the frontline Zaporizhzhia region.
In a statement, the SSU said the suspect, a 45-year-old local resident, attempted to avoid suspicion by disguising himself as an elderly man during reconnaissance missions, including adopting a stooped posture, growing a beard, and wearing appropriate clothing, Caliber.Az reports.
According to investigators, the man was recruited after seeking “easy money” through Telegram channels and was tasked with identifying positions of Ukrainian Defence Forces units in the regional capital. He allegedly gathered information during patrols and later sent descriptions and coordinates to his handler.
The SSU said it documented the suspect’s activities and detained him at his residence, while taking steps to secure targeted military locations. Authorities added that a smartphone and tablet containing evidence were seized during a search.
Investigators have charged the suspect with treason committed under martial law. He remains in custody and could face life imprisonment with confiscation of property if convicted.
