Ukraine imposes sanctions on Russian cultural figures
President of Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a decree imposing sanctions on several Russian cultural figures, including Mikhail Shvydkoi, the Russian President’s Special Representative for International Cultural Cooperation, along with four other individuals.
The decree, published on the official website of the President of Ukraine, also targets Anastasia Karneeva, Artem Nikolaev, Ilya Tatakov, and Valeria Oleynik, Caliber.Az reports.
According to Ukrainian authorities, the individuals were involved in preparations for Russia’s participation in the 61st Venice Biennale of Contemporary Art, where they were expected to represent the Russian pavilion.
Kyiv had previously voiced opposition to Russia’s participation in the event and engaged in diplomatic efforts aimed at influencing the organisers’ decision.
Ukrainian officials say the sanctions are part of a broader policy aimed at increasing pressure on individuals and organisations considered to be supporting or cooperating with Russia. The process involves proposals from relevant ministries and approval by the National Security and Defence Council, followed by presidential decrees.
