Ukrainian president accuses US of ignoring Russian aid to Iran
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the United States has disregarded evidence that Russia is assisting Iran in attacks on American military sites in the Middle East.
Speaking in an interview with Alastair Campbell on The Rest is Politics podcast, the Ukrainian leader said he had tried to draw the White House’s attention to the close collaboration between Moscow and Tehran, The Guardian reports.
According to Zelenskyy, Russian satellites photographed critical energy infrastructure across the Gulf states and Israel, as well as US military bases throughout the region, and this intelligence was subsequently passed to Iran for targeting.
“I said this publicly. Did we hear a reaction from the US to Russia that they have to stop it?” Zelenskyy asked rhetorically. “The problem is they trust Putin. And it’s a pity,” he added.
He also criticised the trilateral negotiation process on ending the war in Ukraine, noting that US representatives under Donald Trump failed to fully grasp Russia’s objectives. Envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner “spent too much time” with Russian leaders and officials, travelling to Moscow five times without visiting Kyiv.
Zelenskyy stated he better understands “Russian leader’s psychology and actual war aims than the White House” and warned that after Donbas, Russia’s next step could target regional centres like Dnipro and Kharkiv.
“We have to recognise that partially Americans are feeling that [Donbas is] nothing for us,” he noted.
