Ukrainians split over acceptability of leaving NATO Details of an opinion poll

24 May 2022 15:11

Ukrainians were almost evenly divided on whether it is acceptable for Ukraine to abandon NATO during a war while receiving security guarantees.

This is evidenced by a survey of the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, European Truth reports.

Some 42 per cent of those polled believe that in the current conditions it may be acceptable to receive security guarantees from states such as the United States, Great Britain, Germany, France instead of NATO.

At the same time, 39 per cent continue to insist that only joining NATO can ensure Ukraine's security, and therefore it cannot be abandoned.

Meanwhile, 19 per cent of respondents either did not decide on their opinion, or did not agree with any of these statements at all.

Readiness to abandon NATO and receive security guarantees is growing from West to East – from 35 to 50 per cent. At the same time, the number of people who insist on joining NATO has decreased from 46 per cent to 25 per cent.

The survey was conducted via telephone interviews using a computer on a random sample of mobile phone numbers from May 13 to 18. Except for Crimea, 2,000 people from all over Ukraine were interviewed. The sample did not include residents of Ukraine's temporarily uncontrolled territories, as well as citizens who had travelled abroad.
