UN chief welcomes ceasefire, calls for lasting peace
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has welcomed the announcement of a two-week ceasefire and called on all parties to “respect the ceasefire to pave the way for a durable and comprehensive peace in the region,” UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said.
Guterres also urged all sides to uphold their obligations under international law, in a statement delivered on the evening of April 7, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Associated Press.
“The secretary-general underscores that an end to hostilities is urgently needed to protect civilian lives and alleviate human suffering,” Dujarric noted.
International law requires the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure.
Jean Arnault, the secretary-general’s personal envoy, is in the region “to support efforts toward lasting peace,” the spokesperson added.
