UN forum member condemns deprivation of freedom for Bonaire residents
June Soomer, a representative of the UN Permanent Forum on People of African Descent, has condemned the ongoing denial of freedom for the people of Bonaire, stating that they are being deprived of their rights to live freely in their own land.
Speaking to journalists in Baku, Soomer expressed her commitment to advocating for Bonaire's right to self-determination, emphasizing her support for collaborative efforts with the Baku Initiative Group to address the island's plight, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
Soomer highlighted the critical need for international awareness and action regarding the situation in Bonaire.
The UN representative underlined the importance of global awareness in combating colonial legacies and emphasized the forum's role in addressing issues related to colonialism and slavery. She urged for substantial initiatives to lead colonized regions towards independence and stressed the need to evaluate these efforts effectively.
While the forum is currently not directly engaging with colonial powers, Soomer noted that it is actively assessing the actions taken by European states in addressing colonialism. She called for increased international efforts to shed light on the challenges faced by the people of Bonaire and support their pursuit of freedom and self-determination.
