US Air Force secretary confirms no immediate plans to transfer F-16s to Ukraine

24 August 2024 15:28

The United States will not be transferring its own F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine in the near future, US Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall confirmed in an interview with Finnish media.

Kendall stated that while the possibility is not entirely dismissed, there are no current plans to send these advanced aircraft to Ukraine, Caliber.Az reports.

Kendall highlighted that Ukraine’s immediate need for fighter jets is being addressed through the support of NATO allies, including Denmark and the Netherlands, which are supplying F-16s to bolster Ukraine’s defence capabilities. The US is also actively involved in training Ukrainian pilots, which Kendall noted will see significant advancement over the next year.

The F-16 Fighting Falcon, a multirole fighter jet developed by General Dynamics, is renowned for its versatility and has been a mainstay of air forces around the world since its introduction in the 1970s. Known for its agility and combat effectiveness, the F-16 is a key asset in modern aerial warfare. However, transferring these jets involves complex logistical and political considerations.

Kendall's remarks came during a two-day visit to Finland, part of a broader tour of NATO countries in the Baltic Sea region. The visit aims to strengthen ties and coordinate defence strategies among NATO allies.

The US remains committed to supporting Ukraine through other means, including the provision of military aid and training, as well as collaborating with its international partners to ensure Ukraine's defence needs are met.
