US discusses with Syria measures against Iranian influence
The United States has engaged with the new Syrian authorities in Damascus, focusing on key issues that are central to both nations' concerns.
One of the primary topics discussed was the need to prevent the resurgence of Iranian influence in Syria, an issue that remains a critical point in U.S. foreign policy in the region, Caliber.Az reports referencing foreign news sources.
Alongside, the American delegation emphasized the importance of protecting U.S. citizens, particularly in light of the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the fate of missing American nationals.
Additionally, the U.S. diplomats reaffirmed their commitment to continuing the fight against ISIS, underscoring the necessity of collaboration in the battle against terrorism. Another significant point of discussion was the establishment of an inclusive political process in Syria, one that ensures the representation of all Syrians in the decision-making processes.
In a broader effort to foster understanding and promote inclusivity, the American delegation also met with a group of Syrian women—journalists, activists, and academics. These women shared their perspectives on Syria’s future, offering valuable insights into how a truly representative government could be formed, one that includes diverse voices in its political processes.
To recall, on December 20, US diplomats also met Syria's new leaders to discuss developments following the Assad regime fall.
Bashar al-Assad, Syria’s leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia after anti-regime groups took control of Damascus on December 8, ending the Baath Party’s regime, which had been in power since 1963.
