US, Russia agree on diplomatic mission financing, explore air travel resumption

28 February 2025 16:19

In a recent meeting in Istanbul, representatives from Russia and the United States reached an agreement aimed at securing the unimpeded operation of their diplomatic missions.

The discussions, which focused on ensuring the financing of these missions, led to an agreement to create the necessary conditions for diplomats from both nations to carry out their duties effectively, says a statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.

Joint steps were outlined to guarantee reciprocal financing for the activities of the Russian and US diplomatic missions. The meeting further emphasized the need for practical actions that would facilitate the improvement of bilateral relations, ultimately benefiting both Russian and American citizens.

Additionally, the US delegation was invited to consider the possibility of restoring direct air links between the two countries.

This dialogue on diplomatic cooperation comes in the wake of strained relations following the Ukraine conflict. Notably, the US had closed its airspace to Russian aircraft, a move that was mirrored by Russia in response. With both countries having imposed flight bans on one another, the proposal to restore direct air communication represents a potential step towards easing some of the travel restrictions imposed during this period of heightened tensions.

The Russian Foreign Ministry reiterated its offer to the US to explore the feasibility of re-establishing direct flights, which were suspended after the onset of the military operation in Ukraine. Following this, both sides have expressed their commitment to resolving key issues and improving relations, particularly in the realms of diplomacy and transport. This latest development signals a cautious but notable attempt at stabilizing ties between the two global powers.

Russian and US diplomats held talks in Istanbul on February 27 to discuss the normalization of operations at their respective embassies, following years of expelling each other's diplomats.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the meeting was a follow-up to an understanding reached during President Donald Trump's call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, as well as discussions between senior Russian and US officials in Saudi Arabia.

During a meeting with the Federal Security Service, Putin praised the Trump administration for its "pragmatism and realistic approach," contrasting it with what he called the "stereotypes and ideological clichés" of previous US administrations.
