US searching for suspect in "Turkish House" attack in New York
The United States is looking for a suspect in the attack on the "Turkish House" in New York.
The Turkish authorities identified the suspect following an investigation initiated after the information was received, according to information received by Anadolu.
It was established that Recep Akbiyik, registered in the Turkish region of Giresun and having a criminal record in Türkiye for “inflicting bodily harm, threatening and possession of drugs,” was involved in the attack on the Turkish House.
The Turkish authorities passed the information to the New York Police Department (NYPD).
The NYPD stepped up their investigation and raided the homeless shelter where the suspect was staying the day before.
In the report on the suspect, it was noted that he had mental problems.
Recep Akbiyik is still on the wanted list.
Earlier, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that Ankara expects the United States to quickly identify those involved in the attack on the Turkish House in New York and provide the necessary protection to Turkish diplomatic missions.
Turkish Consul General in New York Reyhan Ozgur said the incident occurred at 03:14 local time. According to him, an unknown man damaged the entrance door to the consulate and the windows with a crowbar.
The Turkish House building in New York, which hosts the Permanent Mission of Türkiye to the United Nations and the Consulate General, came under attack on May 22, as an unknown assailant carrying an iron stick smashed multiple windows of the building.
The attack was reported at around 3:15 am on the East Side of Manhattan, according to the New York Police Department, Huriyyet reports.
