US senator urges Armenia-Azerbaijan peace, citing "tremendous benefits"
U.S. Senator Steve Daines, a member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, underscored the potential benefits of a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan following his regional visit to the South Caucasus.
In a post on the social media platform X, Daines shared insights from his recent meeting with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
"In meeting with Armenian PM Pashinyan, we discussed U.S. critical mineral investments and regional security concerns, including the Trump Admin’s desire to achieve lasting peace in the region. I echoed Secretary Rubio about the tremendous benefits if Armenia and Azerbaijan sign a peace agreement," the senator wrote.
Prior to his stop in Yerevan, Senator Daines visited both Azerbaijan and Georgia. In Baku, he met with President Ilham Aliyev, offering congratulations on Azerbaijan’s Independence Day and commending Azerbaijani forces for their cooperation with U.S. troops during operations in Afghanistan.
During the meeting, Senator Daines emphasised the importance of deepening ties with Azerbaijan and the broader Central Asian region, including expanding the number of U.S. Senate visits. President Aliyev, for his part, underlined Azerbaijan’s strategic importance as a logistics hub across Eurasia, particularly within the Middle Corridor route connecting East and West.
In addition to his meeting with President Aliyev, Daines held talks with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and Israel’s ambassador to Baku, George Deek.
