US State Department hails Trump as “president of peace” after Baku-Yerevan deal
US State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce on August 12 praised President Donald Trump’s role in brokering a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, calling it a landmark achievement that ended decades of hostilities.
“The declaration of peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan has reaffirmed that President Trump is indeed the president of peace,” Bruce told reporters at a press briefing, Caliber.Az reports.
She recalled that last week, the US president hosted the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan at the White House, where she said “they signed a historic joint declaration for peace after decades of bitter conflict and too many lives lost – a landmark achievement for international diplomacy and an end to violence that only President Trump could deliver.”
Bruce noted that in addition to the peace declaration, the two leaders signed bilateral economic agreements with the United States. She said these would “unlock the great potential of the South Caucasus region in trade, transit, energy, infrastructure, and technology; and create new opportunities for the American people and American businesses.”
Asked about possible future steps, Bruce declined to speculate but underscored the significance of the agreement.
“The world knows to take President Trump seriously. This arrangement, this deal, is important to him. They were at the White House. This matters to this administration. It matters to the world,” she said. “These two neighbors have been in conflict for decades – I think it’s over 35 years now – with countless lives lost and generations scarred.”
Bruce contrasted the achievement with previous diplomatic efforts, noting that while the Europeans, and Russians, and even Biden have tried before, "only President Trump was able to successfully bring these two countries together to agree to this historic peace."
“He is committed to longstanding, durable peace between countries regardless of how long the conflicts or hostilities have lasted. That commitment is based in diplomacy, but he’ll do what he needs to do to make the most of being President of the United States and stopping the wars," she added.
On August 8, 2025, President Trump hosted Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at the White House for the signing of a US-brokered peace agreement. The leaders endorsed a seven-point framework stressing respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the renunciation of force.
During the summit, the foreign ministers of both countries initialled a draft “Agreement on Establishment of Peace and Inter-State Relations” in the presence of Trump, Aliyev, and Pashinyan.
A highlight of the meeting was the agreement to establish the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP), also known as the Zangezur Corridor — a transit link connecting mainland Azerbaijan to its Nakhchivan exclave through Armenia, aimed at boosting regional and international trade.
