Vance: Trump’s Middle East tour signals major US shift from interventionism
US Vice President J.D. Vance has said that President Donald Trump’s recent tour of the Middle East marks a significant shift in US foreign policy away from decades of interventionism and nation-building abroad.
He made these remarks during a commencement speech at the US Naval Academy, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Recalling the trip, which took place from May 13 to May 16 and included stops in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, Vance emphasized that the most consequential outcome was a clear “rejection of the foreign policy approach the US has followed for several decades.”
Vance explained that the US had conducted a long-running foreign policy experiment in which it traded defence and support for its allies in exchange for nation-building and interference in the affairs of other countries. He added that this policy had extended even to states that had little connection to key US interests. The vice president described this new direction as a landmark shift in the US global strategy, signaling a move toward more restrained engagement overseas.
