Washington talks peace while arming Yerevan

26 July 2024 15:38

The US Embassy in Armenia emphasized the need for a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan to unlock South Caucasus economic potential.

"The peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan is poised to unlock the economic potential of the South Caucasus and the time has come for its signing," it said in a statement.

The statement followed meetings between the State Department's Caucasus Negotiations Advisor, Louis Bono, and US Ambassador Kristina Kvien with high-ranking Armenian officials, Caliber.Az reports via Armenian media.

They discussed efforts to establish "a lasting and honourable peace between Yerevan and Baku," according to the embassy's release.

However, amidst US assurances about the necessity of a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, questions arise regarding the real motives and actions of the US.

While the US Embassy in Yerevan actively promotes the idea of a peace agreement, it is notable that the US and Armenia are simultaneously conducting joint military exercises, Eagle Partner 2024.

Is this truly the "lasting and honourable peace" the State Department advocates? The paradox is evident: while calling for a peaceful resolution, the US engages in military training with one party to the conflict.

This contrast raises serious questions about the sincerity of US peace efforts and how such actions might be perceived in light of Yerevan's recent provocative behaviour.
