White House welcomes Modi's visit to Ukraine amid conflict

24 August 2024 10:34

The White House has shown optimism regarding Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Ukraine, suggesting it could play a “helpful” role in moving towards a peaceful resolution of the ongoing conflict.

This visit follows Modi's recent controversial embrace of Russian President Vladimir Putin during a Moscow trip, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

John Kirby, spokesperson for the National Security Council, stated that if Modi’s visit contributes to achieving “an end to the conflict that aligns with President Zelensky’s vision for a just peace,” it would be considered a positive development.

This is Modi’s first visit to Ukraine since India established diplomatic relations with the country in 1992.

Modi’s arrival in Ukraine, following a seven-hour train journey from Poland, marks him as the first Indian leader to visit the war-torn nation. The timing of the visit is notable as Ukraine has ramped up its counteroffensive against Russian forces, reclaiming several settlements in the Kursk region.

The United States has expressed support for Modi’s visit, with Deputy Secretary of State Richard Verma calling it an “important trip.” The White House’s endorsement underscores the potential influence of Modi’s diplomatic efforts on the global geopolitical landscape.
