Why Boeing 747 captains still earn some of aviation’s biggest salaries

27 May 2026 05:20

Even as the iconic Boeing 747 disappears from passenger fleets around the world, the pilots who still fly the four-engine giant remain among the aviation industry’s most specialised — and best paid.

In 2026, Boeing 747 pilots continue operating some of the world’s longest and most technically demanding flights, particularly in cargo aviation, where the aircraft remains difficult to replace despite its gradual retirement from commercial passenger service, according to Simple Flying.

According to salary estimates compiled by ZipRecruiter, pilots identified specifically as Boeing 747 pilots in the United States earn an average of around $135,000 annually. But industry figures say experienced crews at major cargo airlines can earn far more once bonuses, overtime, international allowances and profit-sharing are included.

Senior captains at large freight operators can realistically earn between $300,000 and $450,000 a year in total compensation packages.

The aircraft’s complexity is one reason salaries remain high. Boeing 747 pilots manage four engines, enormous fuel loads and long-haul international operations that can stretch beyond 14 hours. Many flights also require augmented crews and advanced knowledge of oceanic, polar and international airspace procedures.

Cargo carriers have increasingly become the aircraft’s primary operators. Airlines including Atlas Air, Cargolux and UPS Airlines continue relying heavily on the Boeing 747 freighter because of its unmatched cargo capacity and nose-loading design.

The post-pandemic boom in global e-commerce has further increased demand for large cargo aircraft, helping drive salaries higher for experienced long-haul crews.

Public pilot contract data cited by Airline Pilot Central shows senior Atlas Air captains can exceed hourly rates of $330, while experienced first officers may earn more than $220 per hour depending on seniority.

However, the job comes with a demanding lifestyle. Cargo crews often spend days travelling between global freight hubs such as Anchorage, Hong Kong, Frankfurt and Chicago while working overnight schedules and coping with severe jet lag.

Passenger Boeing 747 operations, meanwhile, have become increasingly rare. Lufthansa remains the world’s largest passenger operator of the aircraft, continuing to fly both the Boeing 747-400 and Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental on long-haul routes from Frankfurt to cities including New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo and Johannesburg.

At airlines like Lufthansa, Boeing 747 assignments are typically reserved for highly senior pilots. Industry salary estimates suggest long-haul captains can earn between $200,000 and $320,000 annually depending on rank and experience.

The shrinking size of the Boeing 747 fleet has also created a unique labour market. Training new crews on the aircraft is expensive, while experienced captains are becoming increasingly rare as retirements accelerate.

The final Boeing 747 rolled off Boeing’s production line in 2023, officially ending production of one of aviation’s most recognisable aircraft. Yet despite the decline of the “Queen of the Skies,” airlines continue to depend on its unmatched cargo capabilities and long-haul performance.

For many pilots, flying the Boeing 747 remains the pinnacle of a commercial aviation career — a position earned only after years of experience, extensive training and progression through smaller aircraft fleets.
