Why have Washington and Yerevan stepped up contacts? Armenian analysts have an answer

Armenian Centre for American Studies has analyzed the recent increase in Armenian-American contacts.

Caliber.Az reports quoting Armenian media outlets, analysis by the centre was published by Armenian Luys Foundation.

"The American policy in the region remains unchanged: a full settlement of Armenian-Turkish and Armenian-Azerbaijani relations, due to which Armenia will form an environment independent of Moscow.

It follows from the above that Armenian-American relations will intensify when a window of opportunity opens on the issue of regional conflict management, which means reducing Russian influence in the South Caucasus, even at the expense of Turkish influence.

In other words, Armenian-Turkish and Armenian-Azerbaijani relations for the US do not mean just a settlement of relations between the two countries but correspond to US interests in the region.

By and large, the US does not care whether the Karabakh conflict is resolved within the framework of a people's right to self-determination or territorial integrity. Equally, the US does not care what concessions the sides make in Armenian-Turkish relations.

The main thing is the prospect of a quick resolution of the problems.

To sum up, we can conclude that there has been a noticeable intensification in Armenian-American relations of late, with a significant increase in telephone conversations and summit meetings. This is not due to the introduction of new issues on the relationship agenda or an increase in diplomatic efforts, but, unlike previous phases, is due to Armenia's willingness to settle with its neighbours at all costs, including unilaterally and through global compromise.

High-level Armenian-American contacts will continue in the near future. It is possible that in 2022 the heads of Armenia and the USA will finally meet. Anytime soon, various senior US figures will visit Armenia, including heads of Congress and the administration," the analysis says.
