WSJ: Russia arms Iran with surveillance, drone systems targeting US forces
Russia has been ramping up its intelligence and military support for Iran, supplying satellite imagery and advanced drone technology to assist Tehran in targeting US forces across the region, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Moscow aims to keep its key Middle Eastern partner engaged against US and Israeli forces, seeking to extend a conflict that provides both military and economic advantages to Russia, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reports.
The support includes upgraded components for Shahed drones designed to enhance communication, navigation, and targeting capabilities, the sources said.
Drawing on its experience with drone operations in Ukraine, Russia is also offering tactical advice on how to deploy drones effectively, including recommended numbers and optimal flight altitudes, according to a senior European intelligence official.
In addition, Russia has been sharing the locations of US military personnel and allied positions in the Middle East, the WSJ added. Early in the conflict, Moscow reportedly provided satellite imagery directly to Iran, as confirmed by both the European officer and a Middle Eastern diplomat.
Analysts note that this support mirrors the type of intelligence the US and its European partners have provided to Ukraine in recent years. In the Gulf, Russian assistance is believed to have helped Iran carry out strikes on US radar installations, including an early warning radar associated with a THAAD system in Jordan, along with other targets in Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman.
The Kremlin has not responded to requests for comment.
