WSJ: US concerns grow over Oman’s role in Iran nuclear talks

18 August 2026 09:26

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is increasingly concerned that Oman could help Iran secure a nuclear agreement with Washington on terms more favorable to Tehran, according to The Wall Street Journal, citing U.S. officials.

The issue has reportedly deepened tensions within the Trump administration, where officials are divided over Oman’s role. Some senior U.S. officials privately accuse Muscat of supporting Iran and acting in bad faith, while others argue that Oman’s longstanding relationship with Tehran makes it a valuable intermediary in diplomatic efforts.

According to the newspaper, some officials believe Trump is unfairly making Oman a “scapegoat” as he looks for potential explanations for why negotiations with Iran could fail.

U.S. officials are also reportedly concerned that an agreement involving Oman could strengthen Iran’s influence over the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically vital maritime route through which a significant share of global oil supplies passes. Trump wants any agreement to ensure the waterway remains fully open to international shipping.

The tensions escalated on August 17, when Trump threatened Oman with military action, accusing the country of potentially obstructing efforts to reach an agreement with Iran.

“If Oman gets in the way, we’ll bomb the sh*** out of them,” Trump said.
