Yerevan sees infrastructure boost from peace deal with Baku
A peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan could pave the way for the South Caucasus to emerge as a major regional infrastructure and transport hub, Armenia’s deputy finance minister said.
Speaking in Samarkand, Edgar Mkrtchyan made the remarks during a governors’ session at the 59th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Asian Development Bank, according to Azerbaijani media.
He emphasised that Armenia’s commitment to peace remains central to its development strategy and highlighted recent progress in relations with Azerbaijan.
“Last year at this same session, we declared our firm commitment to peace as a necessary condition for development. Today, following these commitments, I am pleased to note tangible progress, including the preliminary signing of a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the interests of regional stability.”
Mkrtchyan added that unlocking regional connectivity could significantly reshape the economic landscape of the South Caucasus.
“Transforming the South Caucasus into a hub of cooperation through the unblocking of regional infrastructure and transport links based on the principles of sovereignty and reciprocity will benefit the entire region,” he said.
