MEP offers to place Patriot missile systems in Ukraine instead of Poland
WORLD 28 November 2022 - 15:00
The effectiveness of the air defence systems Patriot, which Germany wants to transfer to Poland, will be much higher if they are deployed in Ukraine.
The statement came from the Polish MEP from the Law and Justice party Joachim Brudzinski on the air of RMF FM, RBC-Ukraine reports.
"It's a fantastic idea for Patriot to go to Ukraine. The Ukrainians are operating much more sophisticated missile systems than the German Patriots of the 1980s," he said.
He is sure that concerns about the Ukrainians' ability to operate the system are "detached from reality".
"Any help from NATO is necessary and appropriate for Poland. For many months we have been asking the German side to support Ukraine with real deeds instead of battered Bundeswehr [German Army] helmets, instead of symbolic aid - two ambulances. This is in the interest of the entire European community and the entire North Atlantic Treaty Organisation [NATO]," he said.
After the missile fell in Poland, German authorities offered to hand over the Patriot air defence system to deploy it on the Ukrainian-Polish border.
Poland also asked Germany to provide Patriot to Ukraine to protect the skies from missiles.
However, Germany pointed out that these air defence systems were intended only for NATO member states.
