Teen sets off fireworks, igniting wildfire in southern California VIDEO
A 13-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of starting a wildfire in coastal Southern California this week after lighting fireworks that ignited dry brush, local authorities have confirmed.
The resulting blaze, known as the Rancho Fire, forced the evacuation of about 100 homes in canyon areas of Laguna Beach, Caliber.Az reports, citing the American media outlet ABC.
Fire crews, supported by aerial units, quickly moved to protect residences as flames spread on July 7 afternoon. The fire was contained to 4 acres (1.6 hectares) with no structural damage reported.
Initial police detentions included two juveniles, who were later cleared as witnesses, according to a city statement. Subsequent video evidence showed a juvenile suspect igniting a firework and fleeing the scene, leading to the arrest of the 13-year-old.
The boy was taken into custody shortly after the evidence surfaced and faces potential charges including felony reckless burning of forest land. He was released to his parents following the arrest.
The Laguna Beach incident is one of dozens of wildfires currently burning across California amid worsening fire conditions. On July 9, the state experienced particularly high fire risk due to soaring temperatures and low humidity in inland Southern California.
Meanwhile, the Madre Fire in southeastern San Luis Obispo County has become California’s largest wildfire of the year. Since breaking out on July 2, it has consumed over 125 square miles (323 square kilometres) of grassland and is now more than 60% contained.
