Azerbaijani Energy Ministry, Saudi Arabian ACWA Power ink deals on wind energy co-op

The Azerbaijani Ministry of Energy and Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power company signed a number of documents during the ninth ministerial meeting within the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council and the first ministerial meeting within the Green Energy Advisory Council in Baku on February 3.

The "Executive contract for the implementation of an offshore wind power project with a capacity of up to 1.5 GW", "Memorandum of Understanding on the establishment of an onshore wind farm with a capacity of 1 GW" and "Memorandum of Understanding on the development of energy storage systems in the Republic of Azerbaijan" were signed, Report informs.

“From today, our partnership with ACWA Power is being expanded with projects to build wind farms with a total capacity of 2.5 GW and, for the first time in our country, energy storage systems,” Azerbaijani Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov said.

“These projects are another contribution to the implementation of the state policy for the development of Azerbaijan as a country of “green growth” and a “green energy” supplier. Our joint activity with ACWA Power is important not only to provide new capacity for the planned green energy corridor from the Caspian Sea to Europe, but also to reduce carbon emissions, accelerate the energy transition,” the minister added.

“Azerbaijan is moving towards a cleaner and more sustainable future under wise and visionary leadership. We, as ACWA Power, value our relationship with Azerbaijani partners and are pleased to expand our role in accelerating the transformation of the country's energy industry today by signing new agreements,” ACWA Power Chairman Mohammad Abunayyan  said.

Currently, ACWA Power is cooperating on the construction of the Khizi-Absheron wind farm with a capacity of 240 MW.
