Estonia urges NATO countries to increase defence spending

    WORLD  31 May 2023 - 10:08

Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas held a meeting with British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, during which she called on NATO countries to increase defence spending to two percent of GDP.

"In order to implement concerted action to strengthen NATO and parallel further support for Ukraine, it is crucial to reach an agreement in Vilnius that defence spending by all allies will immediately increase to 2 per cent of GDP," she said, according to Lenta.ru.

Kallas stressed that in the future the spending should be increased to 2.5 per cent of GDP. She said that by 2030, Tallinn's investments in national defence will increase to 3 per cent of GDP.

In addition, the Estonian prime minister stressed the need for Ukraine to join NATO after the military conflict in the country ends.
