PM: Armenia ready to border delimitation with Azerbaijan based on 1975 maps

01 June 2023 23:33

Yerevan and Baku have tentatively agreed on delimitation on the basis of the 1975 Soviet maps, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said at a meeting with the Armenian community of Moldova, commenting on the meeting with Ilham Aliyev.

Pashinyan held a meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on the sidelines of the summit of the European political community in Moldova, mediated by the leaders of France and Germany, as well as the head of the European Council, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Armenian media.

In general, according to Pashinyan, the discussion can be considered useful. The first point of the negotiations was the mutual recognition of the territorial integrity on the basis of Alma-Ata Declaration, which was agreed upon in Prague.

"The Alma-Ata Declaration - that the countries recognize mutual territorial integrity, the inviolability of borders within existing borders. That is, the administrative borders of the Soviet Union turn into state borders," Pashinyan said.

Later in Brussels, he said, the sides made another step forward. They came to a conclusion that Baku recognized Armenia's territory of 29.8 square kilometers, and Yerevan recognized Azerbaijan's integrity of 86.6 square kilometers. In Moldova on June 1, he said, another detail was tentatively negotiated, although we still have to wait for Azerbaijan's reaction.

"The sides don't seem to mind taking the 1975 maps as the basis for further delimitation works between Armenia and Azerbaijan," Pashinyan said.
