Azerbaijan pledges closer ties with Pakistan in wake of Kashmir escalation

10 May 2025 11:29

Azerbaijan will remain steadfast in its support for Pakistan, a senior Azerbaijani lawmaker said, reaffirming Baku’s enduring solidarity with Islamabad amid heightened tensions in South Asia.

Speaking to journalists, Samad Seyidov, Chairman of Azerbaijan's Milli Majlis Committee for International Relations and Interparliamentary Ties, emphasized the deep-rooted and growing ties between the two nations, Caliber.Az reports per local media.

“Pakistan is a trusted and longstanding friend of Azerbaijan, and our bilateral relations will continue to deepen and strengthen over time," he stated.

Seyidov noted that Azerbaijan has consistently expressed its clear stance regarding developments in the region, particularly the ongoing escalation between Pakistan and India. “Both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan and MPs have repeatedly expressed their position,” he said, underscoring that Baku’s support for Pakistan has been unwavering and principled.

“We believe that Pakistan is our close friend and has always supported us. These relations will grow stronger. Azerbaijan will always be close to Pakistan,” Seyidov affirmed.

The statement comes at a time of increasing instability in the region following cross-border hostilities between India and Pakistan, further highlighting Azerbaijan’s diplomatic alignment with Islamabad.

The current crisis was ignited by a deadly attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir last month, which New Delhi blames on Pakistan-based militants. In response, India launched “Operation Sindoor”, targeting what it describes as “terrorist infrastructure” in both Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir—sparking a cycle of retaliatory strikes.

In the latest developments, Pakistan announced the launch of a military operation against India early on May 10.

The operation targeted several sites, including a missile storage facility in northern India, as tensions between the neighbouring countries escalated to their most intense level in almost 30 years.

Earlier, Pakistan's military had confirmed the initiation of strikes against Indian military sites under the operation "Bunyan Marsoos," following a series of attacks on three Pakistani airbases by Indian "air-to-surface missiles."
