Türkiye, Hungary shake hands for mutual support within NATO

Hungary and Türkiye agreed to support each other in NATO.

According to TASS, the announcement came from the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations of Hungary, Peter Szijjarto, following a telephone conversation with his new Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan on June 4.

It was Fidan's first day as head of the Foreign Ministry after the announcement of the new composition of the Turkish government by Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was re-elected to the post of president of the republic following the elections held in May. Previously, Fidan headed Turkish intelligence.

“Of course, I congratulated him and told him how much we wanted the victory of President Erdogan. We assured each other of our commitment to developing a strategic partnership between the two countries and agreed to continue mutual support in NATO,” the Hungarian minister wrote on his Facebook page.

Szijjarto did not explain why the Allies needed mutual support in the North Atlantic Alliance. Hungary and Türkiye remain the only members of the military bloc that have not yet ratified the documents on Sweden's accession to it and are therefore under strong pressure from other states.
