Lasting Azerbaijan-Armenia peace important, says Washington

Washington thinks it is important that Armenia and Azerbaijan reach a lasting peace agreement, said the US Department of State Spokesperson Matthew Miller.

"It’s something that we have pushed for some time – for some time. It’s something that we have said publicly we believed was within reach if both sides were willing to make difficult compromises. Obviously, we have not seen that happen in the last few months," Miller said in a press briefing on September 25.

He added that Washington thinks the upcoming meeting between Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan next week to be important in normalising ties.

"We think it’s important that they meet and ultimately bridge the divide between their two countries," Miller said.

President Aliyev and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan are expected to meet in the Spanish city of Granada in early October.
