Baku urges Moscow to hold perpetrators accountable after fatal raid on Azerbaijani family
The Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs has demanded an urgent and thorough investigation by Russian authorities following a deadly operation conducted by the Federal Security Service (FSB) of Russia in Yekaterinburg on the morning of June 27. The incident resulted in the deaths of two Azerbaijani nationals and left several others seriously injured.
According to a statement cited by Caliber.Az, the Ministry expressed deep concern over the deaths and injuries sustained during FSB raids carried out in residential homes belonging to members of the Azerbaijani community.
“We expect the Russian side to conduct an urgent investigation into the matter and bring the perpetrators of this unacceptable violence to justice as soon as possible,” the statement read.
The FSB operation targeted the residences of the Safarov family, Russian citizens of Azerbaijani origin from the Aghdam district, living in various areas of Yekaterinburg. The operation began around 5:00 a.m. on June 27.
During the raid, brothers Ziyaddin and Huseyn Safarov were killed. Eight other family members sustained injuries of varying severity due to beatings inflicted during the operation.
Four individuals — Akif, Ayaz, Kamal, and Mazahir Safarov — were hospitalised in serious condition.
In total, nine people were detained by law enforcement during the raid. According to Azerbaijani community members in Yekaterinburg, the operation was reportedly linked to a murder case that took place in 2001 in a café formerly owned by the Safarov family.
