Azerbaijan, Armenia continue peace agenda after Aliyev-Pashinyan Bishkek meeting

01 September 2026 09:19

Azerbaijan and Armenia continued discussions on the peace agenda following the August 31 meeting between their leaders in Bishkek, with senior officials from the two countries taking up the issue in a separate contact.

Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration Hikmet Hajiyev said he discussed the peace agenda with Armenian Security Council Secretary Alen Simonyan.

“Following the meeting between President Ilham Aliyev and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Bishkek, discussions on the peace agenda continued with Alen Simonyan,” Hajiyev said in a post on X.

The contact came shortly after Aliyev and Pashinyan met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in the Kyrgyz capital, where they reviewed the progress of the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace process and discussed steps to further consolidate bilateral relations.

The two leaders highlighted the significance of the August 8, 2025 Washington Peace Summit, the Joint Declaration they signed in the presence of US President Donald Trump, and the initialling of the agreed text of the peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

They also discussed practical elements of the emerging peace framework, including economic and trade ties, border delimitation and the implementation of the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP).
