Ex-president fighting for Georgia against Russia

05 December 2023 19:40

Georgian ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili has written that changes should have occurred in the United National Movement party he founded.

Saakashvili commented on the mass withdrawal of prominent representatives from the party amid a conflict with the new leadership, according to Gazeta.ru.

“The United National Movement probably should have followed this path, and I am sure that in a year it will emerge from these processes stronger and more organised,” Saakashvili wrote on Facebook.

He wrote that, like his party, he is confronting Russia to the end. Saakashvili emphasised that he is fighting for Georgia in this “battle”.

“I am fighting for Georgia against the Russians and their henchmen and I am not interested in internal intrigues. I am always open to different people and groups to create an even stronger union, either now on the platform of the Victory Coalition, or a little later, when everyone understands that there is no alternative to unity,” the ex-president wrote.

Saakashvili returned to his homeland in October 2021, despite several criminal cases against him. As a result, the ex-president of Georgia was arrested and imprisoned. Saakashvili himself called his detention politicised and went on a hunger strike. Subsequently, the ex-president’s health severely deteriorated. He was transferred from prison to a clinic in Tbilisi for a check-up in May 2022. Despite his health condition, he has repeatedly voiced his readiness to participate in Georgian politics. The United National Movement did not exclude the possibility that the movement will nominate the politician for prime minister if it wins the next elections.
