    POLITICS  12 June 2024 - 20:10

A delegation led by Latvian Prosecutor General Juris Stukāns has paid a working visit to Azerbaijan at the invitation of Azerbaijani Prosecutor General Kamran Aliyev.

The delegation visited the graves of Azerbaijani national leader Heydar Aliyev and outstanding ophthalmologist, academician Zarifa Aliyeva, as well as the Alley of Martyrs in the Alley of Honour, the Azerbaijani Prosecutor General's Office told Trend.

While welcoming the delegation at the meeting at the Prosecutor General's Office, Aliyev noted the successful development of relations between the two countries and emphasised the importance of expanding cooperation in the legal field. He also reminded his visit to Riga in February last year and meetings with Latvian colleagues.

The Azerbaijani prosecutor general informed his colleague about reforms aimed at strengthening law and order and ensuring the rule of law in the country in accordance with the priorities of the strategic course and state policy being pursued by President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, the complete restoration of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity under the leadership of the victorious Supreme Commander-in-Chief and the rapid reconstruction and construction work in Karabakh thanks to the attention and care of President Aliyev and First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva.

While expressing gratitude for the invitation and warm welcome, Stukans noted that he was glad to see Azerbaijan’s dynamic development. He said that Latvia is interested in developing ties between the prosecutor's offices of the two countries.

The sides emphasised the successful cooperation between law enforcement agencies of the countries in the fight against crime within the international conventions and organisations in which both countries are members, including Eurocast and the International Association of Prosecutors.

The Azerbaijani prosecutor general announced that the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change COP29, one of the most prestigious international events, will be held in Azerbaijan in November 2024, as well as the 29th annual conference and general meeting of the International Association of Prosecutors from September 29 to October 2, 2024.

Several issues of mutual interest, including the implementation of requests for legal assistance and asset recovery in criminal cases in anti-corruption, money laundering and other spheres, as well as the upcoming signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to develop the relations were discussed at the meeting.

Latvian Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador Edgars Skuja took part in the meeting.
