UN welcomes Aliyev-Pashinyan meeting in Abu Dhabi as positive step toward peace
The recent meeting between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on July 10 in Abu Dhabi has been welcomed by the United Nations as a constructive development in the peace process between the two countries.
Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, speaking to the American bureau of Report, described the meeting as “a step towards strengthening the agreement on the text of the peace treaty,” which was initially reached in March this year.
“We welcome this dialogue between two countries that have been experiencing tensions for a long time. We remember the agreement on the peace treaty reached in March and consider this a very positive development. This meeting can be seen as a step towards strengthening the agreement on the text of the peace treaty. The secretary-general is following these processes very closely,” Dujarric stated.
On July 10, 2025, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan met in Abu Dhabi to advance peace efforts following decades of conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh.
The talks build on a March 2025 agreement on the peace treaty’s text aimed at formally ending hostilities and addressing key issues like border delimitation and displaced persons.
Facilitated by the United Arab Emirates, the meeting sought to strengthen this agreement and promote dialogue between the two countries.
The international community, including the UN, has welcomed these developments as vital steps toward lasting peace and regional stability.
