Azerbaijan, Sudan highlight expanding ties ahead of diplomatic milestone
Speaker of Azerbaijan’s parliament Sahiba Gafarova has met with Sudan’s ambassador to the country, Anas Eltayeb Elgailani Mustafa, to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across multiple sectors.
During the meeting, the sides noted the upcoming 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Sudan, due next year, and underscored the potential to deepen ties, Caliber.Az reports per the parliament.
They recalled recent high-level contacts, including visits by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan to Azerbaijan in 2019 and 2024. A meeting between the two countries’ heads of state on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum last year was also highlighted as a key moment in defining future areas of cooperation.
Gafarova emphasised the strong partnership between the two countries within international organizations such as the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and the Non-Aligned Movement, noting consistent mutual support on global platforms. She added that Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis is keen to expand collaboration with Sudan in international parliamentary institutions.
For his part, Ambassador Elgailani praised Azerbaijan’s role in fostering inter-parliamentary dialogue and said he closely follows the activities of the Milli Majlis.
The meeting also reviewed humanitarian cooperation, including Azerbaijan’s provision of educational support for Sudanese students. The two sides exchanged views on further areas of mutual interest.
