A green oasis in the heart of Baku: President Aliyev inaugurates reconstructed Central Botanical Garden PHOTO
President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva, and their family members attended the grand opening of the Central Botanical Garden in Baku following extensive reconstruction and landscaping efforts.
Eldar Azizov, Head of Baku City Executive Authority, briefed the president on the significant upgrades made to the garden, Caliber.Az reports, citing Azertag.
The restoration, initiated under the direct orders of President Aliyev, expanded the garden’s area from 39 hectares to 45 hectares. A wide range of modern facilities was introduced, including a new entrance complex, greenhouses, a fountain, and meticulously restored historical structures.
The upgraded garden now boasts rare ornamental trees, shrubs, and flowers sourced from around the world, along with a three-block greenhouse complex, a lake, and an observation deck. A crescent-shaped two-story administrative building underwent thorough restoration, while a new four-story administrative facility was built.
Additional features include a 650-meter pedestrian bridge with elevators, a maze-shaped greenery area, a children’s entertainment zone, two restaurants, and a modern parking lot. Infrastructure upgrades encompass pedestrian paths, lighting, benches, fire safety systems, video surveillance, and an irrigation system covering 26 hectares of greenery. The historical design of the old entrance area and the garden’s perimeter walls were also preserved.
Established in 1934 to conserve Azerbaijan’s unique flora and gene pool, the Central Botanical Garden serves as a hub for ecological conservation, scientific research, education, and awareness. Its plant collections span various global climatic zones, providing valuable contributions to scientific studies.
The comprehensive redevelopment underscores Azerbaijan’s commitment to biodiversity conservation and the enhancement of green urban spaces, offering both residents and visitors an enriched experience in the heart of Baku.

The renovation includes expanded pedestrian zones, a significant increase in greenery, and a revamped lighting system, highlighting the park's commitment to sustainability and aesthetics. New architectural features, including an observation deck offering stunning views of the city, have been installed, enriching the park's appeal for visitors.
Additionally, a children’s playground has been set up for younger guests to enjoy. The garden now houses 600,000 trees and bushes, further establishing its role as a major ecological asset in the capital.
