Arab League urges Iran to halt attacks and return to dialogue
Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League, has again condemned Iran’s attacks targeting several Arab countries, warning that the situation in the region has become “dangerous and unacceptable.”
In a statement cited by BNA, Aboul Gheit said the strikes constitute a blatant violation of international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter. He described the attacks as a direct breach of the principles of good neighbourly relations and warned that they are creating unprecedented hostility between Iran and its Arab neighbours.
According to the Arab League chief, the escalation risks causing a deep and lasting rift between Iran and Arab states, with potentially long-term consequences for regional relations.
Aboul Gheit stressed that there is no justification for targeting neighbouring Arab countries in an attempt to drag them into military confrontations in which they are not involved. He noted that several of the countries affected have made serious efforts to prevent catastrophic escalation in the region.
Continuing such attacks, he said, represents a “serious strategic mistake by Iran” that must be corrected and stopped immediately.
Aboul Gheit also warned of the risks of the conflict widening further, urging Tehran to address the situation with the countries that have been targeted before it is too late. He called on Iran to return to rational dialogue in order to preserve what remains of security and stability in the region.
