Armenia gets six more ATAGS howitzers from India

14 September 2023 16:38

India delivered the first six 155mm Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems (ATAGS) to Armenia in August.

The statement came from Baba Kalyani, Chairman of the Indian company Bharat Forge Limited, the Indian Defence Research Wing reports.

“The howitzers were delivered as part of the order for the supply of 90 ATAGS to Armenia for $155.5 million. The contract provides for the phased delivery of an additional 84 towed howitzers of this type over the next three years,” the newspaper said.

Kalyani noted that Bharat Forge plans to deliver the artillery systems to Armenia ahead of schedule.

Earlier, the media reported that Armenia ordered a batch of artillery systems from India in November 2022. At the same time, the publications referred to the deliveries of 155mm/39 MArG self-propelled howitzers.

In late September 2022, India and Armenia signed a contract worth approximately $244 million to supply arms to Armenia. The order reportedly includes the first-ever export of Indian-made Pinaka MLRS.

Remarkably, Armenia emerged as the first export customer to acquire the 155-millimeter ATAGS artillery guns even before India, the host country, procured them for the Indian Army.

The ATAGS system has successfully cleared all Indian Army User Trials, attesting to its effectiveness and reliability. Before placing their order, the Armenian Defence Forces conducted two months of rigorous trials with the ATAGS guns at the Pokhran Range.
