Armenian PM plans post-election meeting with Russian president

03 June 2026 16:17

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan plans to visit Russia and meet with President Vladimir Putin after the parliamentary elections scheduled for June 7.

“The President of Russia called me on June 1 to congratulate me on my birthday. But, of course, beyond congratulations, we also had a substantive conversation. We agreed that after the elections I will travel again, meet [him], and we will resolve all current issues,” Pashinyan said during a meeting with voters as part of his election campaign, according to Armenian media.

The prime minister also reiterated that he intends to resolve all outstanding issues in Armenia’s relations with Russia.

Armenia’s parliamentary elections on June 7, 2026, are considered a key political turning point, coming after years of major domestic reforms and deep geopolitical shifts.

Campaigning features a crowded field of political forces, with the ruling Civil Contract party of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan currently leading in polls but facing stronger competition and the possibility of a coalition government rather than a single-party majority.

The vote is also taking place in a highly sensitive geopolitical context, as Armenia continues to adjust its foreign policy away from exclusive reliance on Russia and toward deeper engagement with the European Union and the United States.

Observers note that the election outcome could influence the country’s ability to advance a potential peace framework with Azerbaijan and determine the pace of constitutional and institutional reforms in the post-conflict period.
