Armenia's desire to annex Karabakh deeply embedded in national ideology Azerbaijani deputy FM says
Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Elnur Mammadov has said that for over 30 years, the Armenian government has been unable to accurately define its national borders.
Mammadov made these remarks at an international conference titled "The Main Obstacle to a Peace Agreement Between Azerbaijan and Armenia," organised by the Azerbaijani Centre of Analysis of International Relations, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
Mammadov noted that the desire to annex Karabakh to Armenia is deeply embedded in Armenian national ideology.
"According to Armenia's Constitution, the foundations of Armenian statehood lie in the declaration of independence. This includes the national goals of the Armenian people. After the second Karabakh war, these issues remain unresolved," he said.
Moreover, he noted that despite the aggression against Azerbaijan, a deal with Armenia is possible.
"I believe that the other side will listen to us, and we will achieve peace and progress in the South Caucasus," he added.
Earlier, Mammadov met with a delegation led by Joshua Huck, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State at Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs.
The discussions centered on bilateral and multilateral cooperation between Azerbaijan and the United States, as well as the prospects for the normalization process between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Mammadov provided an update on the situation in the region following the conflict and highlighted the ongoing progress in peace treaty negotiations.
However, he pointed out the persistent claims on Azerbaijan's territorial integrity and sovereignty in Armenia's constitution and legislative acts, stressing the need for their removal.
